By Chaz Bowyer and Armand Van Ishoven. 1937-8 was a turning-point in the history of military aircraft, as both the Hawker Hurricane and the Messerschmitt Bf 109 entered service with their respective air forces. The Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter, so that the original 600 produced were a godsend during the Battle of Britain, in which the Hurricane destroyed more enemy aircraft than did any other British type, including the Spitfire. The Hurricane continued in use throughout the war, with over 14,000 being built. Its formidable fighter opponent was the Messerschmitt, over 33,000 built, the most constructed aircraft ever. It accounted for 2/3rds of Germany's wartime output of single-seat fighters. This book contrasts these two classic aircraft types. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs.
