The author begins his story with man's earliest timepiec, a stick stuck in the ground to cast a shawod, and traces its history and evolution through sundials and waterclocks, hour glasses and measured candles to the mechanical clock as we know it. He deals with domestic clocks from the end of the 14th century to the present day and with chronometers, Japanese clocks and monumental clocks. Famous clockmakers, both European and American, and the patronage by Royalty of clockmakers all over Europe, are described in some detail. The 136 illustrations include old prints of clockmakers and diagrams of clock mechanizms; and among the color photos are beautiful French and Italin clocks of the 17th and 18th centuries.
